Support La Mama’s 65th season: Looking back on From The Other Side

La Mama on partnership with My Balkans: “As we near the end of our 64th Season, we have been inspired by the way our artists are connecting our local, national, and worldwide network to share stories, learn from one another, and transform communities.
In December, La MaMa presented FROM THE OTHER SIDE: Reimagining Theatre from the Balkans Edition 1.0, featuring artists and companies from Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia. Through live performances, staged readings, livestreams, video performances, talkbacks, and roundtable discussions, audience members experienced a multiplicity of artistic forms and perspectives from the region.
Beyond providing the chance for Balkan artists to share their work with new audiences in NYC, this festival allowed American audiences to better understand the ways that communities in the Balkans are navigating post-war and autocratic environments, connecting the parallels with where we are now as a country. Global cultural exchange like this has always been a central part of La MaMa’s mission to deepen understanding through art.

In reflecting on her time at La MaMa, director Vedrana Klepica (Croatia) shared, “Working as an artist, one of the most rewarding experiences is seeing how your work co
mmunicates in different contexts and with different audiences. It teaches you a lot about artistic dialogue and builds a better understanding of how we approach topics that seem local but still communicate globally.”
